THE BENEFITS OF PROPOLIS TO HONEY BEES
Speaker – Marla Spivak (VIA ZOOM)
BIO: Marla Spivak is a MacArthur Fellow and McKnight Distinguished Professor in Entomology at the University of Minnesota.  An internationally known speaker, her research efforts focus on protecting and enhancing the health of honey bees, and on propagating floral rich landscapes to support all pollinators.  Along with her many contributions to Minnesota and the Twin Cities, in 2016, she won the Siehl Prize for Excellence in Agriculture (category: Knowledge) for her many contributions to understanding bee biology and threats to bee health and a Women of Discovery Award from Wings Worldquest, honoring her pioneering work promoting bee health and conservation. Spivak was elected a Fellow of the Entomological Society of America in 2017.  In 2020 a former student of Spivak’s, bee taxonomist Joel Gardner, named a species of sweat bee Lasioglossum spivakae in her honor.

Speaker – Kristina Williams (IN-PERSON).
Kristina earned a Master’s in honey bee behavior and genetics from CU, worked for the USDA in Texas and Mexico on Africanized bees, varroa, and tracheal mite research, and for KY and WA State Universities on bee diseases.  She has provided subsistence level beekeepers in rural Brazil and had her own combination mason bee honey bee pollination business in Washington. She is the founder and past president of the Mile Hive Bee Club in Denver, President of the Boulder County Beekeepers Association, and past adviser on the board of the Colorado State Beekeepers Association. She currently offers mentoring, classes, and other one-to-one mentoring through her business, Beehave, LLC.
